Created in 2005, the Peter Mendell Award recognizes the excellence of a young string player studying in a Quebec university or in a Quebec Conservatory of Music who is 25 years old or younger.
This annual award is named after Peter Mendell, a highly regarded lawyer at Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg, who is a true music lover and amateur cellist. Peter and Margie Mendell are proud to support musical excellence in partnership with the JM Canada Foundation and JM Canada.
For its 16th edition, the Peter Mendell Prize has decided to offer $10,000 in prizes to a violinist ($5,000) and a cellist ($5,000) of outstanding talent. The other finalists will each receive a $500 grant from JM Canada.
Three (3) candidates will be selected and invited to perform in a final that will take place September 17, 2021.
This final will be held for a live concert in the Joseph-Rouleau Hall of the André-Bourbeau JM Canada’s House.
Due to the current health situation and its restrictions during the registration period which ended last May, many students were not able to register; this resulted in an insufficient number of applications for the cellist award. We have therefore decided to open a new registration period to give more students the opportunity to participate.
Applicants who registered in the first application period remain qualified and do not need to reapply.
New application period: August 23 to September 23, 2021
Final round: November 20, 2021
Next registration: spring 2022
