Montréal, September 28, 2026 – The Jeunesses Musicales Canada Foundation announces that Bennett Van Barr, violinist, has won the 21st Peter Mendell Award. The $5,000 award recognizes the excellence and promise of a young classical musician.
The final took place on September 27 at Jeunesses Musicales Canada’s Joseph-Rouleau Hall in Montréal. Three young string players performed for the audience and jury: violinists Bennett Van Barr and Amellie Gendron, and cellist Gordon Giang. The two other finalists each receive a $500 prize. This edition holds particular significance following the death of Peter Mendell, the award’s founder, in June. The final was held in an intimate setting, in keeping with his wish to support young musicians and give them an opportunity to perform. A public tribute to Peter Mendell will be held at a later date.

This year’s jury comprised Véronique Desjardins, Executive Director of the Jeunesses Musicales Canada Foundation; Danièle Leblanc, Executive and Artistic Director of Jeunesses Musicales Canada; Marianne Dugal, First Violins – 2nd Associate Concertmaster, Montreal Symphony Orchestra.; Janelle Fung, piano professor at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal; and Cameron Crozman, internationally acclaimed cellist.The JM Canada Foundation warmly congratulates all three finalists and thanks the jury members and everyone who came to listen and support them.
About the Peter Mendell Award
Established in 2005 by Peter Mendell, a lawyer, music lover and amateur cellist, the Peter Mendell Award supports young string players as they develop their musical careers.
