2017-2018 PROGRAMMING

JEUNESSES MUSICALES CANADA'S 68^TH SEASON: EXCELLENCE AND DIVERSITY

Montréal, May 10, 2017 – Jeunesses Musicales Canada is launching its 2017-2018 season, which features varied repertoires performed by a passionate group of talented young musicians and opera singers. Young audiences will also have the opportunity to be exposed to music through a number of concert series in theatres and schools, with several exciting new additions to the programme.

The general public is invited to embark on a journey of musical discovery, whether it be at the JMC House's Joseph Rouleau Hall in Montréal, or outside the city, through the tours of the Emerging Artist Concerts and Concerts for Young Audiences. "We have recruited the best emerging talent on the music scene. Their musicality, ability, and brilliant music selection really won us over. This year's season will feature a multicultural repertoire, including Russian, French, Canadian, and Persian music, as well as a concert and talk on world music," says Danièle LeBlanc, Executive and Artistic Director.

Happy Hour Concerts

Six Wednesday evenings in the year, join us to hear the best musicians of the next generation play a dynamic seventy-five minute programme with no intermission. We'll be waiting for you at 5:15 p.m. in order to offer you a complementary glass of wine before the concert, which begins at 6:00 p.m.! This year, you’ll have the opportunity to hear Cameron Crozman, Hugo Lee, and Philip Chiu perform some of the greatest works from the French impressionist repertoire for cello, oboe, and piano in Postcards from France. The Ladom Ensemble, which features accordion, cello, piano, and percussion, will introduce you to the multicultural sounds of their repertoire in a concert entitled Without Borders. In Faune & Naïades, Duo Palladium will take you on a musical journey through a selection of pieces inspired by ancient mythology and literature. You can also discover, or rediscover, the great Russian tradition with the Cheng² Duo, whose cello and piano will transport you to Moscow's Sound. In Red Piano, the Amièle Larivière Duo will become a four-handed orchestra in order to explore the chivalrous history of Tsarist Russia through a series of ballets and operas. Finally, end the season by attending a captivating concert and talk that will provide a number of listening tips to help you fully enjoy world music. Ethnomusicologist Frédéric Léotar will share his knowledge and experience, accompanied by musicians Pierre-Olivier Bolduc, Bruno Deschênes, Ziya Tabassian, and Atna Njock. All in a welcoming space built on a human scale, with impeccable acoustics.

Cushion Concerts

Children as young as three can now discover the joys of music with their families through a series of theatrical concerts designed especially for them. Presented on Sundays at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., these seven different concerts will lead children to discover the opera (Opera Candy: The Gourmet Adventure of Hansel and Gretel, new for 2017), the harp (Head in the Clouds), the lute (Lute, Friend of Kings), Mozart (Mozart’s Flights of Fancy), the Christmas carols of our ancestors (Noël en Nouvelle-France, guest concert), the painting of Guido Molinari (Molinari in the Attic), and the delicate art of instrument making (Stradivarius’ Secret).

Musical Escapades

Preschool and elementary school children will also have the opportunity to have fun while learning about music through a series of concerts created specifically for children between the ages of 3 and 12. These 13 different concerts will be presented at Joseph Rouleau Hall, as well as at the Outremont Theatre and Bourgie Hall, our partner venues.

EMERGING ARTISTS CONCERTS AND OPERA ON TOUR: THE BEST OF THE NEXT GENERATION, NEAR YOU!

Throughout the year, JMC gives talented emerging artists the opportunity to perform on a tour of over 25 cities across the country, both in major urban centres and in less populated areas. These tours, which include an opera and six concerts, allow both dedicated music lovers and the curious to enjoy classical music while discovering the great musicians of tomorrow.

The 2017-2018 season represents a milestone, as JMC celebrates its 25^th opera production with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's famous Don Giovanni. Thanks to the support of the Azrieli Foundation, the JMC opera will take the stage in over 20 cities across Canada, in addition to two performances in Montréal, on October 26, 2017, at the Maison de la culture Frontenac, and on March 29, 2018, at the Le Prévost Auditorium.

CONCERTS AND WORKSHOPS FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES: AWAKENING CURIOSITY AND STIMULATING THE IMAGINATION

Schools, preschools, and concert venues across the country can choose from 19 concerts and 26 musical workshops that introduce children to the pleasures of music. This year, two new concerts have been added to the programme: Opera Candy: The Gourmet Adventure of Hansel and Gretel – a tasty introduction to the opera – and Molinari in the Attic – a musical exploration of Guido Molinari's paintings.

JMC’S SEMAINE DE LA MUSIQUE: A WIDE VARIETY OF FAMILY CONCERTS FOR MARCH BREAK

From March 3 to 11, 2018, during March break, families with children between the ages of 3 and 12 in the greater Montréal region will have the chance to enjoy a multitude of concerts and musical workshops designed to initiate young audiences to the pleasures of music. The 14^th Semaine de la musique, presented in collaboration with Montréal's Accès Culture network, will bring together a host of fascinating creative activities, generally free of charge, including several new additions to the 2017-2018 season. To kick off the festivities, bring your slippers and come dance in the basement at the 3^rd Jammies Jam on March 3, 2018!

Jeunesses Musicales Canada (JMC) is a talent incubator that boosts the careers of the best emerging artists, while helping to democratize classical music for audiences of all ages. Today, JMC seasons include over 1200 musical activities presented across Canada, ranging from high-calibre concerts to exciting musical activities for young audiences.
