A national competition supporting the next generation of Canadian classical musicians
Montreal, February 9, 2026 — Building on the resounding success of the anniversary edition celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Peter-Mendell Prize in 2025, the Fondation Jeunesses Musicales Canada is pleased to announce the launch of the 2026 edition of this flagship competition dedicated to Canada’s emerging classical musicians.
The year 2025 marked a significant milestone in the history of the Prize, with an exceptional edition celebrating two decades of commitment to young talent. In 2026, the Prize returns to its regular $5,000 award, while expanding its reach: applications are now open to Canadian musicians from across the country, reaffirming the Foundation’s commitment to supporting the next generation of musicians on a national scale.
Call to Musicians and Educators
Applications are now open for the 2026 Peter-Mendell Prize, a national competition designed to encourage and recognize artistic excellence among young classical performers.
Eligibility
The competition is open to students in violin, viola, cello, or double bass, 25 years of age or under, who are enrolled full-time in a Canadian university or conservatory.
Application Deadline
📅 Complete applications must be submitted online by May 15, 2026, via the Foundation’s website.
Final Round and Awards
Three finalists will be invited to perform in a public final round, to be held on September 27, 2026, in Montreal.
- Prize Winner: $5,000
- Finalists: $500 each
