Wonny Song

Born in South Korea, Montreal pianist Wonny Song is one of Canada’s most illustrious young artists. Winner of the Galaxie Rising Stars Award in 2002, the Prix d’Europe in 2003, and the First Prize at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 2005, he made his debut in Zankel Hall in the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York in October 2005. Several important engagements are scheduled for the current musical season, including a return to Carnegie Hall in New York with I Musici de Montréal chamber orchestra, concerts in Vallejo and San Diego, California, in addition to a tour of Japan. He has also given several other concerts and recitals in Canada, France, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Italy, and Sweden.

He has performed with renowned ensembles, including the Cincinnati, Montreal, and Toronto symphony orchestras, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Eurasian Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea and Thailand. Also of note is a recital given at the 1993 World Expo in South Korea, and a 1998 performance in Bangkok at the closing ceremony of the Asian Olympic Games, attended by Thailand’s royal family.

Recording is an important part of Wonny Song’s career. Of special note are his participation in the popular box sets “Les grands classiques d’Edgar” and other CDs for the XXI-21 label, which have received critical acclaim. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Music, and the Glenn Gould Professional School in Toronto, Wonny Song has studied with such renowned teachers as Anton Kuerti, Lydia Artymiw, Monique Deschaussée, and Marc Durand.
