Instrument: Tenor Trombone and Euphonium
You think your morning commute is long? Jim Tranquilla regularly travels from his new home in Newfoundland to British Columbia to pursue his long-standing love of music (while his other long-standing love holds down the fort at home). A founding member of iTromboni, Jim is a sought-after educator, adjudicator, clinician, arranger and musician. After completing his Masters of Music and twice receiving the honour of Baccalaureate Soloist at the University of British Columbia, he won the Tenor Trombonist position with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra. Jim enjoys playing opportunities from coast to coast with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Turning Point Ensemble, A Touch of Brass, Vancouver Brass Project, Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and the fogHorns. Jim’s adaptable and friendly approach to music has earned requests to take part in such events as the Official Ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics, the Juno Awards, Jens Lindemann’s BRASSFIRE as well as appearances with Ray Charles, Sting, Frank Sinatra Jr., Wayne Newton and Canadian opera diva Measha Bruggergosman. Jim also works diligently with young musicians and was Associate Director of the UBC Summer Music Institute for several seasons. Known for his beautifully intimate tone, Jim adds a personal, almost vocal approach to the trombone with flare to spare.
