Instrument: baritone
Originally from Winnipeg and a veteran of the University of British Columbia's opera program, his repertoire encompasses more than thirty performed and incredibly diverse roles. Acclaimed for his “well rounded notes and his talent for bombast” (Toronto Star), Canadian-American Gerrit Theule is one of the country’s most promising young bass-baritones.
This season he will be returning to Opera York in Toronto for their production of La Bohème in the role of Colline. Last season saw Guerrit Theule perform in two different 21st century operas as The Farmer in the North American debut of Milch-Sherrif's And The Rat Laughed as a part of Holocaust Education Week in Toronto, and as Brentano/Rumplestiltskin in Winnipeg in a production of Dean Burry's The Brothers Grimm. He also performed as Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte and as Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola, both with Opera Kitchener.
His previous seasons include multiple trips to the operetta stage with Toronto Operetta Theatre in The Bird Seller as Baron Weps, as Colonel Calverley in Patience, or as Frank in Die Fledermaus. Other acclaimed roles include Dr. Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and the Commendatore in Don Giovanni, both for Opera York. He sang with Opera in Concert in their production of Snegurochka as Frost, and in a trio of bass roles as The Gigantic Cook/Farfarello/The Herald in Love for Three Oranges.
